Comment on RMB for Day Kundi: Should China include itself in Afghanistan reconstruction? by Dan K

Although the idea is sound, I'm not terribly comfortable with helping China. Perhaps I am just ignorant to the truth about modern China as a nation, but it seems to me that they maintain stability, in part. by controlling (or limiting access to) information and limiting individual power. While I do think they would be able to promote stability better than the US at this point based on our respective track records at this kind of thing, I wonder about the cost it will have to the people of Afghanistan and to the future of the world. On the flip-side though, perhaps less developed countries need an intermediary step between their current societal structures and what I personally consider to be a more advanced democratic structure. Perhaps this is necessary for a democracy to be able to function.

Mr, Rizvi,

I'm surprised you didn't use the quote I gave you for your story, or comment at all on the presentation I gave or the nearly hour-long question and answer period Rep. Lahti (a good friend of mine) and I held immediately after. Perhaps we sounded too bipartisan and moderate for you? I recall Rep. Lahti and I agreed on many points and over the years we have discussed and worked on many ideas to reform state government.

Also invited were potential 2010 state senate candidates Rich Brown (Dem) and Tom Casperson (Repub.) but both had other events to attend. I was glad to see you there, but disappointed you didn't tackle any of the issues discussed by the many Republicans, Libertarians, Democrats, prominent business owners and local government reps who attended - from the chief of police to Hancock city councilmen to Keweenaw County commissioners.

The Fix-It Formula touched on by The Gazette's coverage, was a proposal I first put out there in 2006, not as much as a republican, but as a former regional journalist. Neither major party wanted to see that reform get through, and perhaps that's still the case. But it is based on sound facts and opinions given by experts of many political affiliations and areas of discipline. The update version is currently being vetted by prominent economists and I hope to have it introduced in the Joint Committee on Economic Growth.

People shouldn't have to wade through your personality to get to the information they need to make their decisions. Please consider that before you cover another event. You write the story for the benefit of your readers, not to vent your personal opinions, preconceived notions or provide newsertainment. If you're at Tech you're already smart - I know you're smarter than this story. You can do better. I look forward to reading your next effort.
